Gary Digital Academy (GDA), a tuition-free, full-time public-school program of the Gary Community School Corporation, is now accepting enrollment applications for the 2019-2020 school year.

Now in its second year, GDA will offer students in kindergarten through 9th grade a blended program where they will participate in twice-weekly in-person instruction at the Gary Area Career Center. The remainder of the week students will attend online instructional sessions and complete learning activities online.

By combining innovative technology with a rigorous curriculum led by Indiana-certified teachers, GDA aims to provide each student with a pioneering blended education experience that meets their needs and supports their academic goals.

Students in all grade levels will be required to attend all live online and in-person class sessions and will take a full course load across the core subjects of math, science, language arts, and history. Middle School and high school students will also be offered Career Readiness Educational exploratory courses to prepare students for a career pathway that could lead to a career certification upon graduation.

“The mix of online and in-person classes does a lot to assist each student where they need to be supported the most,” said Rachel Goodwin, GDA Head of School. “We provide wrap-around supports, targeted services, and differentiated instruction with the goal of developing well-rounded, self-motivated individuals who are in charge of their own success.”

Classes are taught by Indiana-licensed teachers who provide instruction during live online class sessions daily and during in person sessions, and are available to students via phone, email, in-person class sessions and one-to-one meetings. Advisors are also assigned to students to provide wrap-around services as well as ensure students have the resources needed to be successful in a blended environment.

Outside of the virtual classroom, classes at the Gary Area Career Center two days a week will allow students to further develop connections with their teachers and classmates. Depending on the type of supports needed for the student, additional on-site days will be available. Throughout the year, field trips and social outings will contribute to the sense of school community, and virtual clubs and student organizations will give GDA students a platform to further explore interests together in the online setting.

Students enroll in online school for a variety of reasons, including advanced learning, a bullying-free environment, and the ability to balance their education with extracurricular pursuits or medical needs. GDA’s blended approach with both online and in-person instruction will give students a learning option that is right for them.
