Hospital da Luz in the Major National Event of Basic Life Support

24-04-19

Hospital da Luz is a partner of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology (SPC) in an unprecedented initiative that will be held in Vilamoura, on April 27, and which will gather around 1200 people practicing, simultaneously, basic life support manoeuvres (BLS). This will be a national record, with the purpose of raising awareness to the prevention of sudden death.

The event 'Coração nas Mãos' (Heart in Hands) integrates the Portuguese Congress of Cardiology, the major medical congress of the specialty in Portugal, which will take place at Centro de Congressos de Vilamoura, starting at 18:00. Afterwards, the running event 'Corrida do Coração' will take place, as usual, in the first day of the congress.

Aiming to alert to the importance of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the need of basic reanimation knowledge by everyone - the so-called Basic Life Support -, Hospital da Luz joins this SPC initiative.

According to the national registry of pre-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest from INEM, in 2016, in 12 thousand cases of resuscitation attempt where cardiopulmonary reanimation manoeuvres were applied, only 681 patients reached the hospital alive. In more than half the cases (57%), no reanimation manoeuvre was applied before arriving at the hospital and only 3% survived.

To save lives is, therefore, in the hands of every one of us. That's why learning Basic Life Support is a duty of all. Learn how to save lives and put your hands on the heart of those in need.
