Hospital da Luz Setúbal has now available, from the beginning of the month, last generation equipment, with 3D technology, to perform a wide range of ophthalmologic surgeries. Capturing three-dimensional high-definition images, the device allows the surgeon and his team to view in a screen the inside of the patient's eye globe under intervention, in real time, conferring more safety to procedures and offering highly differentiated healthcare. Hospital da Luz Setúbal is the first private unit in the country and the only one in the region south of Tagus river with this kind of equipment for ophthalmologic interventions. It can be used in multiple situations, especially in vitreoretinal surgery, but also in cataract, corneal and glaucoma surgery. The future technical developments will allow its extension to other pathologies.

In traditional equipment, the surgeon is restricted to one position, reclined, viewing everything through the ocular lenses of a microscope. With this technology, he can operate watching a 3D high-definition screen, benefiting in terms of depth vision (always with the possibility to enlarge or reduce zooming) and also in terms of positioning and safety (less rigid and more comfortable, which is important in long surgeries). During surgery, the images are recorded in the device, being available for visualization at any moment. This technology, now available at Hospital da Luz Setúbal, is relatively recent and innovating. 'It represents a plus for doctors, but most of all for patients', highlights David Martins, ophthalmologist from Hospital da Luz Setúbal, where he is specialist in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery.

Besides Ngenuity 3D Visualization System, the operation room from Hospital da Luz Setúbal is provided with other modern equipment for ophthalmologic surgery. In the area of retina, it can answer to urgent situations, such as retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma.
