Melanoma Screening: Half of Participants Referred to Consultation

21-05-19

About half the participants in the screening offered by Hospital da Luz Setúbal on Euromelanoma Day, May 15, were referred to dermatology consultation. For they presented atypical nevi (namely, irregular borders or irregular pigmentation with over 5 mm diameter), solar lentigo (macular pigmented lesions in areas of chronic solar exposure that do not disappear in Winter) or clinical suspicion of skin lesion.

Melanoma is the most serious of skin cancers, thence the importance of prevention and early detection. Overall, 31 people in the district of Setúbal participated in the screening (fulfilling all the vacancies available), with ages between 25 and 70 years, the majority women (22).
Most of them decided to respond to the appeal to prevention launched by Hospital da Luz Setúbal, since they had many skin moles, some of them with recent alterations in appearance or simply because they had never submitted themselves to this kind of medical evaluation.
