Pelvic Pain and Overactive Bladder Control: New Treatment at Hospital da Luz Arrábida

18-04-19

The teams of the Urology Service and Pain Treatment Unit from Hospital da Luz Arrábida have inserted the first sacral spinal stimulation device, last April 1. This treatment was applied to a female patient with overactive bladder, associated with chronic pelvic pain and very frequent need of bladder emptying, in order to relieve these complaints.

After a detailed study of the possible causes for this clinical situation, it was decided to proceed to the electrical stimulation of the sacral zone in order to evaluate its efficacy. This procedure consists in the introduction of an electrode in an opening of the sacral bone (at the base of the spine), near the main nerve root responsible for bladder control.

After four weeks of testing to evaluate the efficacy of treatment, and verifying an improvement of the patient's clinical situation (with significant reduction of pain and lesser need of bladder emptying), it was decided to proceed to the definitive implant of the sacral spinal stimulation device. This treatment resulted also in a significant improvement of the quality of the patient's daily life.
