Marathon Petroleum Corp. on Wednesday named Michael J. Hennigan president and chief executive officer.
Mr. Hennigan replaces Gary R. Heminger, who is also leaving his position as the energy company's chairman next month. Mr. Heminger announced his retirement last year.
Mr. Hennigan, 60, takes the CEO role effective immediately, and will also join the Ohio-based company's board of directors next month. Since 2017 he has worked at MPLX, a limited partnership formed by Marathon that focuses on midstream energy infrastructure. He previously served as an executive at Energy Transfer Partners, and before that spent the bulk of his career at Sunoco Inc. and related entities.
"Since joining us in 2017, Mike has demonstrated a keen understanding of our business and the value of our platform," James E. Rohr, Marathon's lead independent director, said in a statement.
Marathon said it plans to announce a new non-executive chairman next month.
