Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) reported a unit shutdown and above-normal gas emissions at its Martinez refinery in northern California.
"Unit at the refinery went down causing the release, material partially combusted during flaring and flowed directly into the atmosphere," the refinery said in a statement to the California Emergency Management Agency. It didn't identify the unit, but said the emissions happened Monday night, and lasted about an hour.
The 166,000-barrel-a-day Martinez refinery is located northeast of San Francisco.
