BMO Harris Bank announced that it was the first financial institution to adopt the Mastercard True Name feature on debit cards.

Mastercard created the True Name option in recognition of transgender or non-binary cardholders to be able to use their preferred identity on a financial document. Mastercard cited research showing people who show identification cards that differ from their public appearance have suffered discrimination in the past.

"At BMO we focus on designing products and services that keep our customers at the center and create positive experiences," Denise Press, head of retail and small business payments at BMO Harris Bank, said in a press release. "Our customers use their debit cards daily and with True Name, they can be at ease knowing that their card reflects their identity."

Existing and new customers in the U.S. can go to a BMO Harris Bank branch to request a True Name credit card.
