Jan. 12--An 83-year-old man died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, of injuries he suffered after being hit by a car at McKee Road and El Rancho Drive in San Jose on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019.
SAN JOSE -- An elderly man died Thursday night of injuries he suffered after being hit by a car near Regional Medical Center in San Jose earlier this week, authorities said.
The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of McKee Road and El Rancho Verde Drive about 6:40 p.m. Monday, according to San Jose police Officer Gina Tepoorten.
Tepoorten said the victim was pushing a shopping cart in a crosswalk facing a red light on McKee Road when he was hit by a 2000 Mazda 626 driving west through the intersection.
The victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office on Friday identified the victim as Jose Sandoval, 83, of San Jose.
The driver of the Mazda remained at the scene and was cooperative, according to Tepoorten. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision.
The death marks the second traffic and pedestrian fatality of the year in San Jose. Last year, 24 pedestrians were killed on city streets, matching a 20-year high set in 2014.
Anyone with information about the collision can contact Detective Kevin McMillin at 408-277-4654.
