McDonald's Corp. (MDC) said it's acquiring Silicon Valley-based tech startup Apprente to harness its voice-activated technology and launch a West Coast tech hub.
Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.
The early-stage, venture capital-backed startup created the automatic order taking software now being tested in a handful of McDonald's drive-throughs to speed up order taking. McDonald's said it hopes to use the technology in mobile ordering and kiosk platforms. The burger giant said the company will be the basis of a "McD Tech Labs" to further its research.
McDonald's acquired the Dynamic Yield startup earlier this year to use AI in suggestive ordering, and has now expanded it to more than 8,000 restaurants in the U.S.
