McDonald's is celebrating history, heritage and legacy at HBCU Football Classics across the country as part of its True to the HBCU program.

The 2018 HBCU Classics season kicked off in Memphis at the 29th Annual Southern Heritage Classic between Tennessee State and Jackson State universities. Although the much-anticipated football game was cancelled due to inclement weather, McDonald's dominated the tailgate area with its one-of-a-kind tailgate experience. College rivalry may have been top of mind for Southern Heritage Classic attendees, but the McDonald's HBCUnion brought together tailgating fans who are true to their HBCU. Gameday enthusiasts enjoyed delicious McCafé Mango Pineapple and Strawberry Banana smoothies, captured cool pictures in the branded photo booth, danced to the sounds of the house DJ and participated in a live recording of popular podcast, The Friend Zone.

The rain didn't stop Tennessee State University junior Rachelle Brown from winning big either. Rachelle received the first of four $10,000 McDonald's True to The HBCU scholarships, facilitated by Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF).

Next up, the brand will continue demonstrating its commitment to the HBCU community by traveling to The Magic City Classic in Birmingham on October 27 and the Florida Blue Florida Classic in Orlando on November 17.
