The Michaels Companies Inc., a crafts retail chain, unveiled a new creative and artistic Michaels MAKE Space at the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton on Aug. 7. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller cut the ribbon and fire chief and grown-up Boys & Girls Club member Gino Lucchetti was on-hand for the celebration too along with Michaels representatives, 75 summer campers and local dignitaries. The renovated space, which is an extension of Michaels three-year partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, will provide an artistic environment to thousands of youth each year.
About 800 square feet, the Michaels MAKE Space features arts and craft supplies, digital arts capabilities, new furnishings throughout, better storage options, improved points of egress, freshly painted walls, and renewed floors. The new space will allow for Boys & Girls Club staff to work closely with youth on both personal art projects designed to unlock creativity through the Club's ongoing art program featuring opportunities like drama and improv, digital animation, and trash to treasure, as well as community-wide initiatives such as Newton's Festival for the Arts.
"At Michaels, we are here for the makers as they fuel their imagination and creativity each and every day, so we're thrilled to have had the opportunity to renovate the artistic space at the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club," said Holly Shaskey-Platek, senior vice president of human resources. "Our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America is truly exciting for us, as it provides all of us here at Michaels the opportunity to help nourish critical youth development and provide an opportunity for Club members to confidently explore and discover their creative voices. We're proud to be a part of this community and we hope that the local youth will enjoy their new Michaels MAKE Space."
"The new Michaels MAKE Space will empower kids and teens at Boys & Girls Clubs of Newton to make, to think creatively, to dream in color," said Jim Clark, president and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. "Michaels commitment and dynamic approach to our mission is both exciting and inspiring. Together, we will enable all young people of Newton - especially those who need us most - to reach their full potential and find their path to a great future."
