For 4,380 Micron Singapore team members, walking became more than a means of getting from one place to another from 14-17 September 2018. Over the four day period, these Micron team members enthusiastically responded to the challenge to track their step count and raise rice donations for 7,000 under-resourced families in Singapore. This was part of the Walk for Rice initiative, where one bowl of white rice and one bowl of brown rice would be donated by NTUC FairPrice Co-Operative Ltd (FairPrice) to families in the South East District for every 200 meters walked by a participant.

Micron Singapore's Walk for Rice initiative was a powerful response to Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra's challenge to team members around the world to clock 100,000 volunteer hours as an organization this year. This is the second year running that the Singapore chapter of the Micron Women's Leadership Network (MWLN) was organizing the event, this time as a combined effort with the Micron Foundation Singapore Committee, in support of the larger scale, community initiative by the South East Community Development Council and FairPrice. Equipped with step trackers, Micron team members participated in teams of up to eight members, spurring one another on to make the effort to walk more. Beyond raising rice, the initiative had the effect of fostering collaboration and camaraderie among the participants.

In total, team Micron recorded more than 168 million steps, amounting to more than 654,000 bowls of rice raised. In addition, more than 28,000 volunteer hours were recorded through the participation, 60% above the stipulated target.

'Our team members responded robustly to the call to help the underprivileged families, and even went over and beyond the target hours to accumulate more steps. It is heartening to see many team members bond together to achieve a common goal. This is truly the Micron Spirit!' said Tan Kia Hiang, Micron's Singapore Country HR Director who also heads the Micron Foundation Singapore Committee and the MWLN sub-committee for People Leadership.

Team members passionately supported the Walk for Rice initiative which started with an opening ceremony kick-off and workout session.
