Mylan is committed to setting new standards in healthcare and providing 7 billion people access to high quality medicine. As part of our ongoing mission, we have outlined another goal: to provide contraceptives to 25 million women and girls by 2020. We are happy to report that we have made significant progress in this effort in India.

On Sept. 26, which has been commemorated since 2007 as World Contraception Day, Mylan launched the second phase of Bharat, a unique project that aims to address important issues in women's reproductive health in Uttar Pradesh (UP), one of the most densely populated states in India. UP is home to more than 16% of the country's population, or more than 200 million people, and has the second highest maternal mortality rate in India and a low literacy rate among women. Over the next few years, the program will spread to other Indian states as well, hence the name Bharat, which is known in English as India.

The objectives of Mylan's Bharat program align closely with the Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) summit goals, which were developed in 2012 by more than 20 countries under the principle that all women should have access to contraceptives. Mylan has committed to providing contraceptives to 25 million women and girls by 2020 and pledged to register our contraceptive portfolio in 80% of the 69 FP2020 countries.

The project also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #3 good health and well-being and goal #5, achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, which includes objectives to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030; ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services and reproductive rights , including those for family planning; and integrate reproductive health into national strategies and programs by 2030.

In India, Mylan's women's healthcare offerings include six types of birth control methods, as well as a portfolio of oral contraceptives. Through the Bharat initiative in UP, Mylan will strengthen its core sales team to create access to these medicines, enhance engagement with gynecologists and improve pharmacy and hospital access in the region. This ambitious project will touch the lives of approximately 1.3 million women, taking us closer to our goal for 2020.
