NEXITY, EIFFAGE, CDC HABITAT, EDF AND GROUPAMA WIN THE TENDER FOR SECTOR E OF THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC VILLAGE

Paris, 22 November 2019

SOLIDEO (Société de Livraison des Ouvrages Olympiques) today unveiled the results of the call for tenders to build the athletes' village for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The consortium composed of Nexity, Eiffage Immobilier, CDC Habitat, EDF and Groupama won the tender for Sector E of the village, located in Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine (Seine- Saint-Denis).

Sector E represents a total floor area of around 53,000 sq.m - comprising 525 housing units, an office building, a childcare centre, and business and retail premises - which will host just over 2,500 Olympic and Paralympic athletes in the summer of 2024 and, starting in 2025, future Saint-Ouen residents.

To showcase French expertise, especially in the field of sustainable urban design, the consortium will bring together more than 50 French companies committed to a low-carbon approach and spread across the entire country. It features a resource-efficient building approach that combines wood and low-carbon concrete, developed by Eiffage Construction, which makes the project's carbon footprint 75% smaller than for the London Olympics. Wood will be 100% French, sourced from France's two largest forest owners (Société Forestière de la Caisse des Dépôts and Groupama) and sawn and processed by the French company Simonin. Smart energy management systems will be installed to reduce buildings' energy consumption. Rooftop solar panels coupled with zinc-air battery storage will generate electricity that will help power homes. Featuring technology developed by EDF, these non-polluting, 100% recyclable batteries are a first for Europe.

This neighbourhood - which was designed just as much for the athletes it will host in 2024 as for future Saint-Ouen residents in the following decades - also makes prominent use of green space (with plants covering 25% of open ground) to cool down the district and prepare for climate change. From ground level to rooftops, a landscape featuring local plant species is adapted to a range of different settings: a wild plant nursery, Saint-Ouen's traditional fruit and vegetable gardens, wildflower meadows and vertical gardens surrounded by spacious balconies. Thanks to this sustainable design, the entire programme will obtain BiodiverCity® certification.

After serving athletes from around the world, the village will become a neighbourhood that harkens back to the history of Saint-Ouen and Plaine Commune, with its fruit and vegetable gardens and the arts and crafts on display at the "Puces" flea market. The seven architecture firms involved - COBE, KOZ, Atelier Georges, SOA, Barrault Pressacco, Lambert Lénack and DREAM - have designed a programme that majestically brings to life the blueprint for the village drawn up by Dominique Perrault Architecture, featuring architectural design that is both singular and spectacular. It also offers innovative community-building areas such as shared kitchens and rooftop basketball courts.

To ensure this neighbourhood benefits all Saint-Ouen residents, after the Games come to an end, the ground-floor levels will house shops and restaurants as well as 1,400 sq.m of business premises dedicated to training and entrepreneurship, which will form a value chain of craft trades and digital expertise, with support from partners including the Mobilier National (France's national furniture design agency) and the Simplon digital academy. The neighbourhood reflects the universal values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by ensuring it is accessible to all and by developing architecture and landscapes that stimulate the senses.
