This is the fourth time in five years that the company has received the national award for its service reliability to its more than 5 million customer accounts.
'We are honored to have won the national award for best-in-nation reliability for another consecutive year,' said
Since the historic storm seasons of 2004 and 2005, FPL continues to make investments to the grid to enhance customer reliability: Hardening more than 50% of main power lines serving critical community facilities and services, such as police and fire stations, hospitals and 911 centers.
Installing more than 5 million smart meters and more than 120,000 intelligent devices along the energy grid using advanced technology that helps detect problems and restore service faster if outages occur.
Clearing trees and other vegetation - a major cause of power outages - from more than 15,000 miles of power lines annually.
Completing one full inspection of the company's 1.2 million power poles and upgrading or replacing those that no longer meet FPL's standards for strength (approximately 150,000 poles inspected annually). FPL has already started the next 8-year inspection cycle.
In addition, the company began the Storm Secure Underground Program, a three-year pilot project to underground segments of neighborhood power lines to determine cost-effective ways to enhance reliability in good weather and bad.
The ReliabilityOne National Reliability Award is given to the regional award recipient that has demonstrated sustained leadership, innovation and achievement in the area of electric reliability. The selection criteria for the ReliabilityOne National Reliability Award are both quantitative and qualitative, including:
Superior regional performance
Sustained performance over time
Improved performance over time
Leadership in outage data collection and reporting systems, processes, procedures and controls
Organizational and cultural focus on reliability
Communication, planning, preparation, and response to major outage events
Contributions to regional system security and reliability
'For the past 19 years, the ReliabilityOne Awards have highlighted outstanding electric utility providers who are building a positive human future in a technology-driven world,' said Gregg Edeson,
FPL also earned the ReliabilityOne Award for Outstanding Technology & Innovation, as well as the Outstanding Reliability Performance Award for the Southeast region.

PA's ReliabilityOne awards are presented to electric utilities providing their customers with the highest levels of reliability in the industry. PA's ReliabilityOne study is based on standard industry reliability statistics that measure the frequency and duration of electric power outages. ReliabilityOne participants on average experienced 53% fewer sustained outages, and outages were 41% shorter than the average US investor owned utility. PA has been analyzing electric utility performance since 1987.
