NRG Energy Statement on House Energy and Commerce Committee 'C.L.E.A.N. Future Proposal'
Published on January 8, 2020 NRG Energy, Inc.
We've reviewed the House Energy and Commerce Committee's release of its outline of the 'C.L.E.A.N. Future Proposal.' Portions of the legislation show great promise. In particular, it includes three important ideas that would modernize the power sector:
a right of customers to buy clean energy from a provider of their choice, regardless of state laws that otherwise lock them into a monopoly utility
an auction-based process where customers and producers can come together for the procurement of clean energy
eliminating barriers that prevent customers from doing business across utility boundaries by requiring transmission owners to participate in an independent system operator to form a wider regional grid
The details of this legislation matter. If done right, these concepts together would create a vibrant energy marketplace where customers are empowered to choose the source and provider for their energy, greatly reducing the cost of decarbonization through competition.
NRG looks forward to continuing to engage with policymakers and stakeholders as the Committee continues its important work.
