Refinery strikes gold with report

The New Zealand Refining Company (NZRC) struck gold earlier this month when it took one of the top prizes for reporting at the Australasian Reporting Awards (ARA) in Melbourne.

NZRC was one of 48 Gold “medalists” at the ARA event which attracted entries from over 300 public and private sector organisations across Australia and New Zealand – and one of seven gold recipients in a minerals and petroleum category which included global miners Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton.

NZRC Chief Financial Officer, Denise Jensen said to be singled out as a leading communicator was reward for the company’s continued focus on improving shareholder understanding of the business.

“For our shareholders and prospective investors the NZRC Annual Report is a key

source for making an investment decision, so the content has to provide an insight to the business, be of value and easy to read.

“As well as understanding our strategy, aspirations and how well we’re meeting targets, shareholders want to know more about refining and how NZRC fits into New Zealand’s fuels supply chain. For the last three years instead of just a report we’ve also provided a Q&A about the business and a web “video” of the year in review featuring comment from the CEO and the leadership team. That approach goes a long way towards retaining our shareholders’ confidence.”

NZRC is no stranger to awards. The company has been recognized as the top corporate reporter by the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) for three years in a row. Entering the ARA for the first time last year saw NZRC take a bronze award.

Said Jensen, “Winning at the ARA is a valuable opportunity to benchmark ourselves against the top performing companies in Australasia, and be recognized for best practice shareholder communications by our accounting peers.”
