More than a thousand school students in Hela now have quality reading books from Australia, thanks to Oil Search and Hela Rural Development Foundation.

With the logistical support of Oil Search's supply chain and seismic project teams, the Hela Rural Development Foundation (HRDF) was able to deliver more than one hundred boxes of library books from Brisbane, Australia to Fugwa in the Hela Province during the month of December.

Eric Yawas, HRDF founder and operations lead said the project aimed to help improve learning outcomes for children in the rural communities.

Mr Yawas also commended his team for their efforts and encouraged resource developers to continue such partnerships that will help improve education and health services for remote communities in the regions where they operate.

"I would like to thank Oil Search under the leadership of Dr. Shane Schofield and Andrew Johnston for transporting every single one of these library books from Australia to remote Fugwa," said Mr Yawas.

"They are an invaluable learning tool for our children, who represent the future of our communities."

Pastor Charles Herowa spoke on behalf of the recipients and commended HRDF for leading the initiative and Oil Search for the company's support.

"We now have quality reading material for our young generation," Mr Herowa said.

Koni Wekio, Oil Search Community Affairs Supervisor told the community that Oil Search is happy to support such initiatives in increasing literary rates and to empower children.

The books were donated to five schools and will benefit students from elementary through to the eighth grade. Resource material for teachers were also included.
