June 14--Yvonne Hollins, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg, calls the fitness center in the back corner of the gym on the second floor of the club at 1227 Berryhill St. in Harrisburg the most underutilized part of the building.

But Hollins hopes that is about to change due to a renovation and a $20,000 donation by the local Planet Fitness franchises and its vendors. The 1,800-square-foot space has been outfitted with a variety of cardio, resistance and free weight equipment. The gym replicates a Planet Fitness, complete with Planet Fitness' purple and yellow colors, and inspirational messages highlighted on the walls that say "you belong!" and "judgement free zone." Planet Fitness. which calls its fitness centers "judgement-free zones," is calling this a "mini judgement-free zone."

This location is Planet Fitness' first mini location in Pennsylvania and is part of its anti-bullying initiative. The Stephen Kindler family, which owns a number of Planet Fitness locations in the Harrisburg area, has provided equipment in the past and was happy to renovate the space, provide the equipment and help to provide the proper certification for instructors.

"This for us was a no-brainer opportunity," he says.

Kindler says the renovations took about six weeks.

"This is the exact same equipment that you have in any of our 1600 facilities," he says. "The great thing is the kids are getting first-class-quality equipment."

Mario Witt Sr., unit director of the building, says that the gym is geared toward its older members 15 years old and up, and has become a place to go for its members to work out during football and basketball season.

"The children are overly eager and overly excited about coming in and being able to work out in an environment that has been created just for them," he says.

Witt says that the members will be properly instructed on how to use the equipment, and they only will be allowed to use the center under proper supervision, which means that the supervisor has the proper certification. Currently, there are two certified instructors.

The Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg was founded in 1939 and provides after-school and summer programming for more than 1,300 children, ages 6 and up, at three Harrisburg locations. Hollins says that children from the two other facilities also will be transported to the Berryhill facility to use the gym. The fitness center will add to its programming.

"We'll be able to add new programs but also enhance some of our Triple Play programs, which works on our healthy habits, mind, fitness and also the body," Mark Hawthorne, director of operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisburg, says.

And in general, it is the hope that the newly renovated fitness center will provide another place for teamwork.

"I think this will give another area for our children to bond," Tymia Green, director of programs, says.

Hollins calls the donation a blessing and was very happy that Planet Fitness chose this location to renovate.

"We want to make sure that all of our children have all of the resources they need in order to become positive productive citizens," Hollins says. "We understand that every child has a gift and we are responsible for nurturing that gift so they are able to reach their highest potential."

A ribbon-cutting celebration for the new fitness center will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday. The celebration will include face painting, a food truck, a bounce house and more.

Hollins says that donations like this send a message.

"A donation like this is very important because it says to us the staff, to our members, to our parents, to the community, that there are people who are out there that truly care about the young people that we serve," she says.
