When disasters such as fires, floods and tornados strike, there's little time to react to ensure that you, your family and your pets survive.
That's why it's key to prepare now.

September is National Preparedness Month, a good time to plan ahead for emergencies to make sure you and your family members are most prepared.

This year's National Preparedness Month theme is 'Prepared, not scared' and the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security are offering a number of valuable tips on the government website https://www.ready.gov/.

The website stresses the importance of planning for disasters and reviewing those plans with other family members, including children.

Here are some general planning tips:

  • Practice a fire escape drill at least two times a year.
  • Download a group texting app so your entire circle of family and friends can keep in touch before, during and after an emergency.
  • Download the FEMA app, which supplies weather alerts for up to five locations and offers disaster resources and safety tips.
  • Register to receive emergency alerts in your area. Visit your local county website or call your local emergency management agency to find out how.
  • Learn how to turn off utilities like natural gas in your home.

Ready.gov also suggests you build a basic disaster kit with items including:

  • Water - one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
  • Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
  • A flashlight.
  • First aid kid.
  • Extra batteries.
  • Whistle to signal for help.
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

These tips and more can be found at https://www.ready.gov/. They could help save your life.
