The Newark, New Jersey-based company said it had profit of $2.76 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $2.33 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.01 per share.

The financial services company posted revenue of $17.45 billion in the period.

For the year, the company reported profit of $4.19 billion, or $10.11 per share. Revenue was reported as $58.13 billion.

Prudential shares have declined slightly since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen 2%. In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $93.58, increasing slightly in the last 12 months.
