Adaro and UI Ready to Distribute 100 COVENT-20 Ventilators to

Hospitals in Indonesia

Jakarta, 28 May 2020, PT Adaro Energy Tbk (Adaro) through Adaro Bangun Negeri Foundation (YABN) has donated Rp 2.5 billion to Engineering Faculty of Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) to produce and distribute 100 ventilator COVENT-20 to the referral hospitals. This collaboration represents the contribution of Adaro and UI in meeting the demand for ventilators in Indonesia amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Syah Indra Aman said," We must act quickly in this pandemic to help each other especially in providing medical devices that are indispensable for handling COVID-19. The need for ventilators for hospitals throughout Indonesia is quite large, and the government cannot be alone in this situation. We greatly appreciate the innovations of the younger generation at UI who create COVENT-20 ventilators that are low cost but have the advantage of accelerating the handling of patients and PDP COVID-19 in Indonesia."

This donation is in line with one of the pillars of the YABN program, Adaro Nyalakan Raga, which is focused on achieving of community health improvement in the operational area of Adaro in particular, and in Indonesia in general.

"Since the idea of COVENT-20 was sparked, our aim has been devotion to the country and supporting the government in tackling COVID-19 in Indonesia. At present, more than 2,000 ventilators are needed by hospitals throughout Indonesia. UI and FTUI are currently building collaboration in the development of research and innovation, especially in the field of medical devices. This collaboration with Adaro is a manifestation of synergy between universities and industry in realizing the downstreaming of research that is beneficial to Indonesia, " Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ir. Hendri D.S. Budiono, M.Eng. explained.

There has been a significant increase in the number of COVID-19 positive patients since March 2020. Ventilators as a tool for handling COVID-19 patients are urgently needed by referral hospitals and emergency hospitals throughout Indonesia. "COVENT-20 has been declared to have passed the product test for CMV and CPAP ventilation modes at the Health Facilities Safety Center (BPFK) in April 2020. The UI's ventilator has also completed preclinical animal testing at the Animal Facility of IMERI FKUI with satisfactory results. Currently COVENT-20 is undergoing human clinical trial at the RSCM, Jakarta, "Chairman of the UI Ventilator Team, Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng. explained.

COVENT-20 has the advantage of multimode ventilation Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Continuous Mandatory Ventilation (CMV). Another advantage is the production cost that is more efficient, compact, portable, energy efficient, and easy to operate. The UI Ventilator Team is a collaboration of FTUI researchers, UI Medical Faculty (FKUI), UI Hospital, Jakarta Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health, Electromedical Engineering Department and Persahabatan Hospital Jakarta.

The university reinstated its commitment to not commercialize the ventilator. The production and distribution of this ventilator would be entirely financed through donations coordinated by the university's alumni. In addition to personal and group donations from UI alumni, several other companies have also committed to donating a number of COVENT-20 ventilators to hospitals throughout Indonesia. Distribution is determined based on the level of urgency and utility, as well as donor recommendations.

The collaboration between Adaro and the University of Indonesia is a real action of the private sector in assisting the government in accelerating the handling of COVID-19 by using homegrown resources.
