  • Core component of smart city concept
  • Up to 500 Mbit/s for end customers
  • 90 percent coverage in initial districts - full coverage by 2025

Cologne, 9 April 2018 - Ludwigsburg is currently installing a fibre optics network which will cover the entire city and the City Council has now selected QSC AG to operate the network. The municipal utility company (Stadtwerke) is installing and providing all aspects of the passive infrastructure, including fibre optics cables and technical building systems. QSC will feed the network with voice, data and IPTV functionalities, as well as providing supervisory and technical support services.

Installing this fibre optics network, which when complete will comprise around 50,000 FTTH and FTTB (fibre to the home/building) connections, represents a core component of the city's digitisation strategy. In developing and expanding the digital services it provides to residents and businesses, Ludwigsburg is pursuing ambitious 'smart city' projects: As well as the digital provision of local authority services to residents, these also include smart energy and mobility concepts, such as test environments for autonomous driving. Not only that, a WLAN network is available to the local population at specific public facilities and in the city centre. This network too is operated by QSC.

ICT partner to municipal utility company

'The digital, networked city of the future - in Ludwigsburg, we are not just talking about that but actually putting it into practice', comments Dirk Fieml, manager of the overall project at Vivax GmbH, part of Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim. 'Having said that, you cannot implement smart services with a patchwork of different networks', adds Bodo Skaletz, Managing Director of the municipal utility company. 'To build a digital and smart city, you need to ensure the universal availability of high-speed networks, and that both for households and companies and in public spaces. Here, we have opted for QSC AG, a partner with decades of experience in safeguarding stable and secure operations in telecommunications grids and providing internet and voice services. With QSC, we can communicate in a partnership of equals and work hand in hand to tackle the tasks ahead'. QSC is also providing the CRM system which already enables local residents to order the high-speed fibre optic connection at the website of the municipal utility company.

Comments Jürgen Hermann, CEO of QSC AG: 'We are delighted by this new contract from Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim. It will enable us to clearly document our expertise and experience in developing and operating telecommunications infrastructures, especially next generation networks. We have noticed that other towns and councils now understand that having their own high-performance communications infrastructures is a key location advantage. We therefore see this as a highly interesting market for the future as well.'
