Statement Regarding Praluent®(alirocumab) in Germany

Amgen has now enforced the injunction prohibiting the manufacturing, sale and marketing of Praluent®(alirocumab) by Regeneron and Sanofi in Germany. The companies will fully comply with the Düsseldorf Regional Court's order, beginning with immediately notifying the appropriate parties and working with healthcare providers so patients can be safely transitioned to other appropriate treatment options. Current supply of Praluent in Germany is not being removed from hospitals and pharmacies at this time.

Regeneron and Sanofi have appealed the Court's decision that Praluent infringes the German part of Amgen's European patent (EP 2 215 124) directed to antibodies targeting PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9). We continue to believe that patients and physicians should have a choice of cholesterol-lowering therapies in order to achieve optimal lipid-lowering for patients.

Praluent remains on the market in other European countries where it is approved for use. The injunction is in no way related to product efficacy, quality or safety concerns, and the approval by the European Commission remains unchanged.

About Praluent

Praluent®(alirocumab) inhibits the binding of PCSK9 to the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor and thereby increases the number of available LDL receptors on the surface of liver cells to clear LDL, which lowers LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in the blood. Praluent was developed by Regeneron and Sanofi under a global collaboration agreement and invented by Regeneron using the company's proprietary VelocImmune®technology that yields optimized fully-human monoclonal antibodies.

Praluent is approved in more than 60 countries worldwide, including the European Union (EU), U.S., Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico and Brazil.

In the EU, Praluent is approved for use in adults:

  • with primary hypercholesterolemia (heterozygous familial andnon-familial) or mixed dyslipidemia, as an adjunct to diet:
oin combination with a statin or statin with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients unable to reach LDL-C goals with the maximum tolerated dose of a statin or,
oalone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients who are statin-intolerant, or for whom a statin is contraindicated.
  • with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) to reduce cardiovascular (CV) risk by loweringLDL-C, as an adjunct to correction of other risk factors:
oin combination with the maximum tolerated dose of a statin with or without other lipid-lowering therapies or,
oalone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients who are statin-intolerant, or for whom a statin is contraindicated.

In the U.S., Praluent is approved to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and unstable angina requiring hospitalization in adults with established CV disease. Praluent is also approved as an adjunct to diet, alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies (e.g., statins, ezetimibe), for the treatment of adults with primary hyperlipidemia (including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) to reduce LDL-C. The effect of Praluent on CV morbidity and mortality is currently under review and not yet approved by any regulatory authority outside of the U.S. and EU.
