--RTL should be allowed to combine with rival ProSiebenSat.1 to give the German media companies a chance to compete with U.S. streaming giants, the CEO of Bertelsmann, RTL's majority shareholder, said in the Sunday edition of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
--"It is vital that meaningful cooperations and even larger mergers are permitted to create national champions, for example in the television sector, such as with RTL and ProSiebenSat.1," Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe said. "Otherwise, depending on developments, national companies won't stand a chance against the giants from Silicon Valley in a few years' time."
--Current competition law doesn't acknowledge the forms in which U.S. platforms increasingly dominate media and advertising, he said, and regulators lag years behind industry developments.
--"The TV business should be deregulated--the rules date back to the analog age when there was no YouTube, no Facebook, no Netflix," he said.
--Rabe, who heads Bertelsmann and RTL, says Bertelsmann is buying further shares in RTL but has no plans to take the broadcaster over completely or to delist it.
