WEBUILD S.P.A. MILAN, July 30, 2019 - Just six months since receiving the contract, Salini Impregilo has opened 15 days ahead of schedule five temporary sections that cover a combined total of about five kilometres along the Bicocca-Catenanuova part of a railway line that is being expanded to allow for travel of up to 200 kilometres per hour between Palermo and Catania, Sicily's two main cities. The temporary sections will facilitate work on the expansion.
The €192-million project awarded by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana foresees the expansion to be done along 38 kilometres of the line. The first results of the project are expected to appear in 2020 with the opening of a line, while all of the work is scheduled to be completed by 2022. Once other related projects are finished, it will be possible to travel between Catania and Palermo in less than two hours by 2025.
The expansion is as an opportunity to create of jobs in the infrastructure sector, which Salini Impregilo plans to consolidate with Progetto Italia (Project Italy). Astaldi, which would be the first to take part in the consolidation, is a member of the consortium working on the expansion along with SIFEL and CLF.
The Bicocca-Catenanuova project belongs to a wider initiative promoted by the European Union to create the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) network to connect and improve the functioning of the region's railway lines. Salini Impregilo is working on other projects of this kind in Italy, such as the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, a high-speed line that will connect Genova with Rotterdam. It is also working on the high-capacity line between Naples and Bari.
