On 27 November, the members' meeting of the BDI (Federation of German Industries) elected Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, Chief Executive Officer of Salzgitter AG, as one of the Vice Presidents of its Presidential Board.

The BDI is the umbrella organization of the German industry and its service provider. It actson behalf of 40 trade associations and more than 100,000 companies with around 8 millionemployees. Prof. Fuhrmann will represent the German steel industry, with the German SteelFederation as its association, on the BDI's Board.

Generating an annual output of almost 42 million tons of crude steel (2017), Germany's steelindustry ranks as the world's seventh largest producer and the largest in the European Union(EU 28). The sector employs a workforce of around 96,000 employees. As a supplier of highlysophisticated materials that are extremely recyclable, the steel industry is of fundamentalimportance for industrial value chains and therefore represents a key backbone of Germany's economy.
