Scania : The UK welcomes the winners of Scania Student Tour Challenge

Scania (Great Britain) Limited's Heathrow branch was delighted to host a visit by the winners of the Scania Student Tour competition recently. A trip to the UK, with a visit to the prestigious and strategically important Scania Heathrow premises included, was part of the prize for the five-strong victorious team.

At Scania Heathrow, the group met Scania's UK Managing Director Claes Jacobsson, together with Adrian Inscoe and Paul Brady of Scania South East.

'The Scania Student Tour Challenge has been a really exciting experience from start to finish; the competition was a great challenge, I really enjoyed driving Scania's Next Generation trucks, and its been fantastic coming to England,' commented Nahal Mustapha, a student at the Stockholm Institute of Technology. 'What's more, the event gave Scania a great opportunity to present itself as an employer, which is something I really appreciated.'

Motivated by sustainability

Nahal's sentiments were shared by her colleagues: 'My degree course is essentially about sustainability, so I was keen to learn more about Scania and really enjoyed listening to Henrik Henriksson speak,' said Nermin Mehmedic of Stockholm University. 'Personally, I feel Scania is going to lead the sustainability race, so I wanted to get on board. That was my motivation for entering the competition, and I'm extremely glad I did. Emerging as one of the winners from an original field of more than 800 contestants is excellent. And as for the prize of a visit to the UK, well, I love London, it is so full of life you can almost taste it!'

'When I reached the second round the competition, I was really nervous, even though the event was still online at that point!' said Jonas Jungåker, who is studying Industrial Management and Technology in Stockholm. 'I had contacted Scania before the event, and they suggested I enter the Scania Student Tour. When I got to the final, it was exhilarating; there were so many friendly faces at Södertälje and it was great to share their love and passion for engineering. I would strongly recommend other students to enter, it's a fantastic event.'

Magdalena Linden, who is studying for a Masters Degree in Industrial Design Engineering at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, said the competition has been a great learning experience for her: 'Now I've found out more about Scania, I would be keen to find an opportunity in the automotive industry,' she says. 'I find Scania's approach to connectivity especially interesting and can see many exciting opportunities in its infotainment system in particular; that's a great tool with which to interact with the driver.

Surprised by a driving experience

'With regard to the competition itself, I didn't know much about Scania beforehand, so did not know what to expect. I wasn't expecting a driving experience. I thought the format of the final was really good - I loved being thrown into a team with people I had never met before and having to respond quickly to a challenge.'

Automotive Engineering student Shreyas Dwarakanath, who is also studying in Gothenburg, entered the Scania Student Tour competition as, with a keen interest in sustainability he felt the event was 'very much my sort of thing.' He added, 'I feel I was lucky enough to succeed, sustainability is my passion and I gained a lot from the experience.

'My next step after university will be to seek work within the automotive industry. I prefer larger engines, so I have really enjoyed the interaction with Scania.

'Regarding the prize, it has been very interesting to visit Scania Heathrow and I am looking forward to spending a little time in London and seeing the sights!'

Scania Student Tour Challenge

The Scania Student Tour Challenge is the biggest student contest Scania has ever arranged and has been open for students from all countries to attend. 30 finalists were invited to the Scania Head Office in Södertälje where they got to solve a real business case, meet Scania's CEO Henrik Henriksson and also got to drive Scania's next generation trucks. Five lucky winners was awarded with 10,000 SEK each and a study visit to Scania Great Britain.
