Scottish and Southern Energy : SSE to close one unit at 2 GW Fiddler's Ferry coal plant

LONDON (Reuters) - British energy company SSE said on Tuesday it will close one of four units at its Fiddler's Ferry coal plant in northwest England due to challenging market conditions.

The plant, in Warrington, Cheshire, has a total capacity of nearly 2 gigawatts (GW). The unit which will be closed has a capacity of 485 megawatts (MW).

The remaining three units at the plant will continue to operate as normal.

"The UK government has committed to phasing out coal power stations by 2025 and it is well known that the economics of coal are challenged. SSE will continue to review the long-term future for the station," the company said.
