The plant, in Warrington, Cheshire, has a total capacity of nearly 2 gigawatts (GW). The unit which will be closed has a capacity of 485 megawatts (MW).

The remaining three units at the plant will continue to operate as normal.

"The UK government has committed to phasing out coal power stations by 2025 and it is well known that the economics of coal are challenged. SSE will continue to review the long-term future for the station," the company said.
