SGS : AAFA Releases 20th Edition of Restricted Substances List

The 20th edition of the Restricted Substances List (RSL) was released by the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) in February 2019 to reflect the latest global regulatory changes.

Published in February 2019, the 20th edition of the AAFA RSL covers 12 categories with more than 250 chemicals and is updated to reflect additions or changes to regulations and laws that restrict or ban certain chemicals in finished apparel, footwear, and home textile products. It is intended to provide the industry with information to facilitate compliance in the global marketplace and to create a safer and sustainable supply chain. The major changes in the AAFA RSL Release 20 are outlined in Table 1.

Updated extractable Arsenic level to be 0.2 mg/kg, extractable Chromium level 2 mg/kg, extractable Lead level 0.2 mg/kg, extractable Mercury level 0.02 mg/kg, and extractable Cadmium level 0.1 mg/kg from ES 7322/2018

Added Benzene (CAS # 71-43-2 with limit 5 mg/kg), Benzotrichloride (CAS # 98-0707 with limit 1 mg/kg), p-Chlorobenzotrichloride (CAS # 5216-25-1 with limit 1 mg/kg), and Benzyl chloride (CAS # 100-44-7 with limit 1 mg/kg)
