Shared energy scenarios: Snam and Terna at the service of the country for the transition to a sustainable world

The progressive decarbonisation of the energy sector is a pillar of compliance with the Paris agreement (COP 21), and will require an integrated effort of the operators of the sector. At national level, Snam and Terna are called to play a role in achieving an energy transition towards a more sustainable world. In this context, work continues on the implementation of shared long-term energy scenarios, necessary for the definition of network development plans.

On February 26, the second Workshop (link to the 1st Workshop) was held in Rome at Terna's headquarters to illustrate the path the two companies are taking and to receive feedback from stakeholders.

In the first part of the workshop, of a general scope, feedback was provided with respect to the observations received in the first workshop, the progress of the development of the national and European energy scenarios, the methodology and the models with which the scenarios will be developed in line with the discussed storylines in the first workshop.

In the second part of the workshop the initial results of the scenarios were presented, in particular the levels of electricity demand, gas and other energy vectors for three scenarios, one developed with a bottom up approach 'Business as Usual' (BAU) and two conceived in top down, 'Centralized' (CEN) development and 'Decentralized' (DEC) development.

For each of the three scenarios an overall evaluation of final consumption to 2030 was presented. In the development scenarios the important contribution of energy efficiency improvement of consumption was considered and are also analyzed the potentials that the electrification and penetration of renewable gases offer to energy system for decarbonisation, in particular, solutions are proposed in the transport sector for more sustainable mobility through the diffusion of electric and gas vehicles (compressed and liquefied) and in the civil sector, more efficient air conditioning systems based on electric gas heat pump technologies. Further details, particularly regarding the electricity supply, will be provided in the next workshop.
