A team of digital engineering innovation experts from Atkins, member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, recently took part in a 'kWhackathon' in central London, hosted by Electron, a team of blockchain, energy and e-trading professionals using decentralised technology to advance the shared infrastructure of the energy markets.
The event brought together 15 teams, including some of the Big Six energy suppliers, independent energy suppliers, distribution network operators, professionals from the water industry and third-party intermediaries. SNC-Lavalin acquired WS Atkins plc on July 3, 2017.
The one-day event gave software developers and other energy professionals the opportunity to access Electron's blockchain energy asset register, designed to be a single source of technical data. The asset registration platform includes data such as electricity and gas meter supply points across the UK and can be used to demonstrate tracking and management of the asset registration process. Furthermore, it implements the agent appointment process and maintains some of the meter technical details (MTDs) associated with supply points.
Teams were given access to part of the blockchain energy asset register Electron has built, and used the day to brainstorm and prototype innovative new applications and services. Electron's developers and other staff members were on hand throughout the event to answer questions and assist participants, and the day culminated in pitches to a panel of industry experts, including Laura Sandys, former MP and CEO of Challenging Ideas, Aeron Buchanan, co-founder of Eth Core Ltd, Rachel Fletcher, CEO of Ofwat and Audey Gallacher, Head of Energy Supply at EnergyUK.
Sam Stephens, Principal Engineer at Atkins, said: 'We assembled a diverse team from across Atkins to take on this unique challenge. Our specialists in cybersecurity, reliability engineering and analytics, software development and data visualisation, all took part to show how we can help rapidly prototype new applications that can work with both existing energy infrastructure as well as future, decentralised models.'
'This type of event is hugely important for the energy industry in terms of the opportunities and learning that it can unlock. It is absolutely critical that we begin to look at more diverse approaches to solving problems and integrating new technology to help provide cleaner, smarter and more sustainable energy and our digital engineering team is demonstrating exactly how we can do that!'
Paul Ellis, co-founder and CEO at Electron, added: 'We hosted this hackathon to allow companies to explore what can be accomplished with blockchains in serious business use cases and to encourage the development of complementary service offerings.'
Digital engineering techniques are of a crucial and growing importance to projects worldwide and utilising new methods to deliver more effective solutions should be part of normal business. Atkins' digital engineering teams show how technology is being used in the energy sector to drive innovation, improve safety and lower costs. Watch more here.
