IMPORTANT AMERICANA HIGHLIGHTS

The selection of fine furniture on offer is led by an Important Scott Family Chippendale Carved and Figured Mahogany Dressing Table, Cabinetwork Possibly by Thomas Affleck (1740-1795); Carving Attributed to James Reynolds (c. 1736-1794), Philadelphia, Circa 1770 (estimate $500/800,000). Representing a distinctly American 18th-century case form, this dressing table stands as a magnificent example of the fully developed Rococoaesthetic associated with Philadelphia's colonial craftsmen. With its accomplished casework attributed to Thomas Affleck (1740-1795) and exceptional carving attributed to James Reynolds (c. 1736-1794), the present work ranks among the best examples of its form made in Philadelphia before the American Revolution. The table has survived in remarkable condition, retaining its original surface and cast brass hardware.

In addition, an imposing Important Stratton-Carpenter-Wheeler Families Chippendale Carved and Figured Mahogany Chest-on-Chest, Cabinetwork Attributed to John Folwell (w. 1762-1780); Carving Attributed to James Reynolds, Philadelphia, Circa 1770 that exemplifies the aspirational magnificence to which the area's elite aspired during the Colonial period, and an Exceptional Queen Anne Inlaid and Figured Walnut Dressing Table, Boston, Massachusetts, Circa 1730 - an exceedingly rare example of the form made with seven graduated drops - further distinguish the exceptional furniture on offer (estimates $300/500,000 and $200/300,000 each).

A striking painting of Mrs. Elizabeth Coffin Amory by John Singleton Copley tops the ensemble of American paintings featured in the January sale (estimate $200/300,000). The subject of Copley's most well-known works, Mrs. Elizabeth Coffin Amory (1743-1823) was the daughter of William Coffin, a successful distiller, and Anne Holmes. In 1764, she married Thomas Amory II (1722-1784, the eldest son of Thomas Amory, who was a prominent merchant and rum distiller. Though notably unpretentious, he enjoyed hosting lavish social gatherings and was close friends with the unusually wealthy and stylish merchant Nicholas Boylston, who

Copley painted three times. The marriage between Elizabeth and Thomas II represented a significant merger between two rival distilling families. Commissioned alongside a half-length portrait of Thomas II, the present oil wonderfully captures the refined elegance and unassuming modesty that characterized the couple and their lives together.

Among the sale's silver highlights are an American Silver and Mixed-Metal Pitcher, Tiffany & Co., New York, Circa 1875 (estimate $40/60,000) and a Large American Silver Agricultural Prize Punch Bowl, Isaac Hutton, Albany, Dated 1810 (estimate $30/50,000). Impressive in scale and exhibiting engraved arms, the bowl is one of a group of silver objects commissioned by Albany's Society for the Promotion of Useful Arts to be given as agricultural prizes. The society was chartered in 1804, aiming to "make improvements in agriculture" in New York, and similar examples of the present work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Albany Institute.

A View of Hong Kong Harbor Qing Dynasty,

Mid-19th Century from the collection of Mr. and

Mrs. Paul Mellon (estimate $20/30,000) and a

Rare and Important Chinese Export Armorial

Large Charger, Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period,

Circa 1705 (estimate $8/12,000) further

distinguish the sale.

FINE MANUSCRIPT AND PRINTED AMERICANA HIGHLIGHTS

On offer from the collection of Lieutenant Paul Garay's family, The Battle-Worn Flag from the USS Corry (DD-463), Lead Destroyer at Utah Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944 is one of the many highlights from our sale of Fine Manuscript and Printed Americana on 24 January (estimate $300/500,000). Rescued by bronze-star recipient officer as the ship was sinking, this exceptionally important D-Day artifact stands as a potent symbol of the Allies' triumph in World War II ---- the battle-scarred American flag that flew over the landing at Utah Beach.

In recognition of his heroism in combat, Lieutenant Garay was awarded the Bronze Star Medal on 27

October 1946. In further appreciation of the his bravery, and of the twenty-four USS Corry crewmembers who lost their lives on 6 June 1944, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this work will benefit the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, whose mission is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty.

Additional highlights from the 24 January sale include an autograph letter signed by George Washington, 1757, to Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie, making an impassioned statement about the rights of British Americans (estimate $300 /400,000); a broadside printed by John Dunlap of the official proclamation of the Treaty of Paris, signed by the President and Secretary of the Continental Congress, which brought the Revolutionary War to an end (pictured left, estimate $800,000/1,200,000); probably the finest copy extant of the first book-form printing of the Declaration of Independence (estimate $300/500,000); and a copy of the 1823 vellum issue of the W. J. Stone facsimile of the engrossed

Declaration of Independence, inscribed in the lower left Presented by the Hon. J.Q. Adams, Sec of State of the U.S. to Thomas Emory, President of the Executive Council of Md. 1824 (estimate $600/ 800,000).

Among the collections to be offered are a group of gifts and keepsakes given to the Marquis de Lafayette during his triumphant 1824--1825 tour of the United States, descended in the family of his granddaughter Jenny de la Tour Maubourg; and the Davy Crockett Collection of David Zucker, which features the last letter written by Crockett known to survive, in which the frontiersman announces he is ''on the eve of starting to the Texes''---- a journey that would lead him to the Alamo (estimate $70/100,000).
