Volunteers set to clean Lake Martin Nov. 1-2

What: The Renew Our Rivers Lake Martin cleanup is Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2. Volunteers should report to one of the following locations: Wind Creek State Park Marina, Kowaliga Boat Ramp or Union Boat Ramp at 8 a.m. each day. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Minors must have a chaperone to participate. The cleanup will end at noon. The Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Alabama Power, the Lake Martin Resource Association, Russell Land Corp., Advanced Disposal, TowBoatU.S. Lake Martin and Wind Creek State Park.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast's largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 15.5 million pounds of trash and debris since the program's inception in 2000.

This is the last cleanup of more than 30 scheduled this year on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: Wind Creek State Park Marina: From Alexander City, travel south on Highway 63 for approximately 5 miles and look for the marina sign on the left.

Kowaliga Boat Ramp: From Alexander City, travel south on Highway 63 until you see the Kowaliga Bridge. The boat ramp will be on the right before you get to the bridge.

Union Boat Ramp: From Alexander City, travel south on Highway 63 toward Kowaliga. When you get to Highway 229, turn left. Follow the road to Highway 50. Go across the Tallapoosa River to Centerport Road and the Union Boat Ramp will be on the left.
