Major retailer recognized for promoting health, safety and well-being of San Diego County residents

The County of San Diego announced today its Live Well San Diego recognized partnership with Target, the nationwide retailer with 23 San Diego County locations. Following the announcement at the Target location on Sports Arena Blvd., San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts proclaimed June 15, 2016 to be “Target Live Well San Diego Day” across San Diego County.

“Target stores are good neighbors to their communities and provide healthy options that everyone can enjoy,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts, Chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “Through this partnership, Target will promote the Live Well San Diego message and encourage healthy living in San Diego.”

The Live Well San Diego vision began in 2010 as a health strategy, recognizing that San Diego County, like much of the nation was facing a tidal wave of chronic disease and rising healthcare costs. The strategy has since evolved into the long term vision to improve the health, safety and quality of life of all County residents.

County officials recognized Target for its commitment to providing San Diego County residents with healthy food options, including the Simply Balanced wellness grocery brand. Designed to offer customers easy options for eating well, the products include wholesome ingredients, and more than 40 percent of the assortment is organic. A fitness flash mob entertained shoppers and showcased Target’s active apparel.

“These partnerships are crucial to a healthy San Diego,” said Executive Director of First 5 San Diego Kim Gallo. “We are connecting a shared purpose of providing a healthier, safer and thriving region for generations to come. We commend Target for partnering with the County and to promote Live Well on this mission.”

In addition to its healthy food options, Target was honored for its caring for communities through giving back and volunteerism. Since 1946, Target has given 5 percent of its profit, back to communities every week. Today, that equals $4 million per week. Target team members in San Diego County volunteered more than 15,000 hours in San Diego communities in 2015 and are on track to volunteer more than 16,500 in San Diego communities in 2016. Additionally, Target has partnered with Feeding America in the fight to end hunger in the United States by donating millions of pounds of food each year to families in need.
