With an objective to promote quality education among the students residing in and around its areas of operation, Tata Steel West Bokaro Division has initiated many projects through Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), the CSR wing of Tata Steel.

216 students of Pre-Matric Coaching Centres run by TSRDS, West Bokaro were felicitated in a ceremony named 'Sambardhana' organised on June 13, 2019 at Auditorium, West Bokaro. The students were felicitated for securing first division in the matriculation examination conducted by Jharkhand Academic Council. 15 students securing top marks were provided with wrist watches.

Ms Anusuiya Uikey, Vice-Chairperson, National Commission of Scheduled Tribes (NCST), Government of India graced the occasion as chief guest along with Ms Maya Chintamn Ivnate, Hon'ble Member, NCST, Ms Meenakshi Sharma, Assistant Director, Regional Office, NCST, Ranchi, Mr Vikash Kumar Sharma, Legal Consultant, NCST, Mr Jugnu Minz, Additional Collector, Ramgarh, Mr Manish Mishra, General Manager (West Bokaro), Tata Steel and Mr Mahesh Prasad, President, Rastriya Colliery Mazdoor Sangh, Mr Vinod Khisku, District President, JMM, Ramgarh, Ms Sarita Devi, Vice President, Zilla Parishad, Ramgarh and Ms Chandramani Devi, Prakhand Pramukh, Mandu Block.

On the occasion, top 25 students out of 134 students of Shishu Niketan, West Bokaro who are sponsored by the company were also provided with study materials. The company is bearing all education related expenses of these underprivileged SC/ST students including study materials and tuition fees.

During the ceremony, study materials were also provided to 34 children from Birhore community who have been sponsored by Tata Steel to pursue quality education at St Robert's High School, Hazaribagh. Under this initiative, the Company bears all the education expenses like boarding, lodging, fees etc. for these children from Birhore Tola from Duru Kasmar village under Mandu block of Ramgarh.

It may be noted here that a total of 349 students who had attended Pre-Matric Coaching classes emerged successful in the matriculation examination this year. These coaching classes were a concentrated effort by the West Bokaro Division to promote education among the community children.

In 2018-19, pre-matric coaching classes were conducted for 1077 students of operational villages across seven different centres for students of class VIII-X. Of them, 349 students appeared for Annual Secondary Board Examination conducted by Jharkhand Academic Council. 216 students got first division, while 97 students secured second division and the remaining 36 students secured third division.

Appreciating the efforts of Tata Steel towards development of the tribal community, Ms Anusuiya Uikey said: 'I am delighted to see the efforts taken by the company towards upliftment of the tribal children in the region. The results of these students will inspire others in the region to work hard.'

Addressing the students, Ms Anusuiya Uikey added, 'With so many initiatives by Tata Steel in the field of education, it is your duty to study hard and excel in life. If one decides and works hard then success will surely come.' On the occasion, Ms Uikey also informed the students about various initiatives of the Government for the tribal community.

Congratulating the students, Mr Manish Mishra said: 'I am extremely happy to know that the students of our community are doing well in studies that reflects in 100 percent pass record. Tata Steel is committed towards the holistic development of the community residing in and around West Bokaro and will continue to extend its support in future as well.'

It may be noted here that the pre-matric coaching by West Bokaro Unit of TSRDS has been changing lives of students since 2012-13 wherein special classes on English, Mathematics and Science are provided to the students for them to excel in the examination. All teachers are selected based on their merit and qualification, followed by an interview. Pre-matric coaching is one of the key educational interventions of Tata Steel's corporate social responsibility to ensure that quality education is made accessible to the deserving students from marginalised communities. The coaching is provided to strengthen the basic concept of subjects, which then reflects their performance during matriculation. Currently, TSRDS is conducting coaching classes in seven centres in and around West Bokaro in the Ramgarh district of Jharkhand.

Among others present on the occasion were Mr Anand Kumar, Chief (Land), Raw Materials, Mr Keshav Kumar Ranjan, Unit Head, TSRDS along with other senior officials of Tata Steel, Union officials and members of the community.
