As part of its Skilling programme, Tata Steel Foundation has organised a three-day residential training and capacity-building programme for prison guards from September 18-20, 2019. This is the first-of-its-kind programme, in collaboration with Prayas, Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai aimed at promoting well-being of both prison guards as well as inmates.

The programme was inaugurated today at Tribal Culture Centre, Sonari by Mr. Sathyendra Choudhary (Superintendent Ghagidih Central Jail), Mr. Vikas Kadam (Senior Social Worker, Prayas Mumbai), Mr. Debdoot Mohanty (Head CSR - Jharkhand & New Projects, Tata Steel) and Captain Amitabh (Head - Skill Development, Tata Steel).

A total of 25 prison guards representing central jails from Dumka, Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Palamu and Jamshedpur have been nominated to attend this workshop. It is in line with the Foundation's engagement with capacity enhancement of prison inmates at Ghagidih Central Jail at Jamshedpur. During the course of the engagement, it was learnt that the prison guards play a critical role in the larger rehabilitation process within a correction home. A training module was therefore developed for prison guards.

The three-day training programme, focussing on both personal as well as professional development of prison staff, aims to impart a deeper understanding of rehabilitation of inmates. This would lead to improvement in inter-personal relationships with inmates and their families, enhancing sensitivity towards working with women and children, augmenting awareness on judicial laws and regulations and spread of awareness on rehabilitation measures through education and vocational training for inmates.
