Tata Steel : TSAF Expedition to Mt. Kang Yatse successful

The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) Expedition to Mt. Kang Yatse was successful with 8 members from Tata Steel reaching the Summit on September 8, 2019. 3 members of the expedition unfortunately had to return. The names of the members who reached the Summit are as follows:

Mt. Kang Yatse II (20 830') situated in Leh - Markha valley in Ladakh region was selected for the expedition because of the thrill and adventure the trek provides. A Semi Alpine style approach to climbing was taken where team members themselves planned for everything like ration requirement, equipment requirement, transportation, load ferry to higher camps thus doing away with porters etc. , in line with TSAFs effort to run programmes in a self-sustaining manner. TSAF experts provided necessary guidance and support to ensure safety for all as well as for providing experiential learning on leadership skills.

Mr. Rajendra Singh Pal, Mt. Everest Summiteer and a highly qualified TSAFs Programme Officer having nearly 3 decades of field experience was overall in-charge of the expedition with support from Ms L Annapurna & Mr. Anil Rana both highly experienced TSAF Instructors. Mr. Sushanta Mahato another experienced TSAF staff member was the quarter master who looked after the food requirement.

The following expedition schedule was followed:

Expedition dates: (August 31^st to September 12^th)

Day 1: Reporting at Leh by 2:00 PM Altitude:- 3,500 m/11,500 ft
Day 2: Acclimatization day in Leh
Day 3: Drive from Leh to Chilling and trek to Skiu - 4-5 hrs of trekking, Altitude: - 3,400m/11,150ft
Day 4: Skiu-Markha - 7-8 hs of trekking, Altitude:-3,700m/12,200ft
Day 5: Markha- Thachungtse-7-8 hrs of trekking, Altitude:- 4,100m/13,400ft
Day 6: Thachungtse - Kang Yatze base camp. - 6-7 hrs of trekking , Altitude:- 5,100m/16,700ft
Day 7: Load Ferry to C-1 and stay at base Camp
Day 8: Summit attempt
Day 9: Summit and back to base camp. Night stay at Nimaling
Day 10 & 11: Reserve day
Day 12: Trek to Road head and drive to Leh
Day 13: Dispersal from Leh after breakfast
