Telford Homes and Matthew Lloyd Architects are among the winners of this year’s Housing Design Awards, recognising the innovative, bespoke design of the Frampton Park development.

The award was announced by the Housing Design Awards committee on Monday 11th of July, following deliberation by the judges as well as the guidance of chairman Gareth Capner and director David Birkbeck of Design for Homes.

The Housing Design Awards were originally established in 1947 with the aim of driving quality in the re-building of post-war Britain. The prestige and heritage of these awards has been a catalyst for cooperation among various arms of government, the private sector and key professional institutions. Today this unique partnership consists of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), National House Building Council (NHBC), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), The Landscape Institute, the Home Builders Federation (HBF), the Greater London Authority (GLA), Housing LIN, Design South East and the Department for Health. The common thread among this varied body is a clear commitment to expanding the quality of design in UK housing.

The Frampton Park development embodies the Housing Design Award’s appreciation for dynamic modern living. Fronting the development is the new Frampton Park Baptist Church, a statement building designed to blend seamlessly with the new housing provided. The development, known as Hackney Square, is a sophisticated collection of 47 one, two and three-bedroom homes designed around an attractive landscaped courtyard. The development maximises the opportunity for useful outdoor space, balanced with privacy and shared activity. There is a large south facing communal garden for the apartments, and surrounding streets have been relandscaped as ‘home zones’. The new Church is accessed from Frampton Park and the café opens onto a new green space which can also be used by residents. All apartments above ground have private balconies, and ground floor apartments have a small private patio area and direct access to the communal garden. The site is well located for public transport and cycle storage is provided. Located on Frampton Park Road, just a few minutes’ walk from Mare Street and London Fields in the vibrant and cultural hub of Hackney, the apartments have been designed to maximise comfort and style.

Among the criteria where Telford Homes’ Hackney Square development shone against the other shortlisted candidate, were: its connection to the neighbourhood and to the surrounding area, the developer and architect’s response to site constraints and opportunities, and its overall layout, grouping and landscaping.
