SYDNEY, Australia - After a Telstra cable was accidentally cut in Sydney’s northern suburbs, thousands of customers reported suffering internet service outages.

According to reports, customers of several internet providers Sydney and some parts of regional NSW found their ADSL and national broadband network (NBN) services had dropped out and have since remained without internet service.

The internet service outage in several areas has already lasted for over 24 hours and many customers are set to suffer outage until the end of the week.

Local reports noted that some corporate customers were also affected by the outage and officers in inner-city are said to have been affected.

Some reports noted that the a developer on a large site in Chatswood was believed to have accidentally cut several cables as part of construction work on an apartment building.

Telstra issued an official statement saying that technicians were currently repairing a “a fibre optic cable cut by a third party, which is impacting several thousand broadband and ADSL services as well as some wholesale services.”

The Telstra spokesman added, "Services are progressively restoring and repair work will continue throughout the day. We apologise for the inconvenience and are doing everything we can to restore services as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, in an update issued on its social media, Aussie Broadband said that some customers in the Sydney region and central NSW were experiencing an outage.

The company described the outage as “damage to 1560 fibres across four optic fibre cables.”

It added that a replacement from Melbourne to be available on Friday.

In a statement issued to Fairfax Media, Phillip Britt, managing director at Aussie Broadband said that the repairs being undertaken by Telstra were “complex.”

Britt said, “This is affecting about 700 of our customers and we understand it is affecting at least one other internet service provider.”

Meanwhile, Dodo too took to social media, to inform customers of the problem, which it described as a "big job" that "could take many hours.”

Further, iPrimus said on Twitter that Telstra technicians were repairing the cables, which could "possibly take a few more hours.”

It added, “A few of the main telecom cables in NSW were damaged, which has caused a wide-spreading outage across a number of different internet providers.”
