Hydroelectric production is still growing strongly
Demand in the first five months of 2018 has increased by 1.6% compared to the same period of 2017 (+1.5% based on the same number of days)

In May 2018, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy stood at 26 billion kWh, a 1.3% increase compared to volumes for the same month in 2017. This year May had the same number of working days (22) and the average monthly temperature was generally in line with May 2017.

Demand in the first five months of 2018, totalling 131.6 billion kWh, increased by 1.6% compared to the same period in 2017. Based on the same number of days, the figure is up by +1.5%.

At the regional level, in May 2018 there was an increase in the North (+2.1%) and in the South (+0.4%) and no change in Central Italy.

The short-term profile for May 2018 showed an increase in electricity demand compared to the previous month (+0.4%). This represents a stable trend.

In May 2018, 87.3% of electricity demand was met by national production and the remaining part (12.7%) by the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (22.9 billion kWh) grew by 1.1% compared to May 2017.
Hydroelectric production grew sharply (+69.7%), whilst all others were variable (geothermal -0.4%; thermal -12.3%; photovoltaic -13.6%; wind -28%).
