World Responsible Tourism Awards

TUI Group was rewarded for excellence in transparent reporting at the World Responsible Tourism Awards today, affirming the business' commitment to leading the way in sustainable tourism. The judges were looking for examples of good practice where businesses publicly report the extent to which they reduce negative impacts, or increase positive impacts. They were impressed by the depth and consistency of TUI's reporting which has been acknowledged in many of the top indices like the FTSE4Good. As one of the first travel businesses to prepare dedicated sustainability reports TUI is able to demonstrate robust and transparent reporting in all of these areas. In 1996, TUI's first environmental report was presented to the then Minister of the Environment and now Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Angela Merkel.

TUI's annual sustainability report publicly monitors progress against its Better Holidays, Better World strategy and sustainability has been firmly embedded in the Group annual report for more than 15 years. In addition, as a signatory to the UN Global Compact, the business completes a yearly progress report against the ten guiding principles in areas such as human rights and environment, and all sustainability initiatives are aligned to the UN's Global Sustainable Development Goals. Regular communications are also issued to a wide variety of audiences from customers to staff, suppliers, hotel partners, media and politicians, and the methodology used to set and measure KPIs is available and updated annually.

Thomas Ellerbeck, member of the Group Executive Committee of TUI Group whose responsibilities include the Group's sustainability programmes, comments: 'Greater sustainability, more environmental and climate protection, better living, educational and working conditions in the holiday destinations - all of these goals are top priorities for TUI in the development of its business. Our goal is to be transparent and open - in our reporting to government bodies and our shareholders as well as our customers, business partners and the public at large. With our current sustainability strategy 'Better Holidays, Better World', we have already actively embraced our responsibility. We will continue our active engagement in our Group-wide sustainability strategy for the period from 2020 to 2030.'

TUI launched its' Better World, Better Holidays strategy in 2015 outlining ambitions and commitments in sustainability. Since then the business has delivered more than 20 million 'greener and fairer' holidays*, accomplished 11.7% reduction in CO₂emissions per passenger night in Cruise operations and TUI's airlines are ranked as some of the most carbon efficient airlines globally according to independent data**. In 2018 alone, 9.2 million 'greener and fairer' holidays were delivered (12 per cent increase year-on-year). TUI analysis showed that hotels with sustainability certifications outperform non-certified hotels, demonstrating 10 per cent lower CO2, 24 per cent lower waste volume, 19 per cent less fresh water per guest night, 23 per cent higher use of green energy and higher customer satisfaction scores. A total of 81 per cent of TUI Hotels & Resorts held sustainability certifications in 2018.

Furthermore, TUI has committed to reduce 250 million pieces of single-use plastics across its business by 2020. Initiatives include removing 112 million single-use plastic items from hotels, launching 'plastic reduction guidelines' for hotels and TUI Cruise's ambitious wasteless plastic reduction programme.
