Valmet Oyj's trade press release on September 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. EET

Valmet will deliver turnkey automation solutions to two new plants currently under development. A new combined heat and power (CHP) plant will be built in Vilnius, Lithuania, and a waste treatment facility in San Sebastian, Spain.

The Vilnius project consists of two bio boilers and one waste-to-energy line, while the San Sebastian project encompasses two waste-to-energy lines. Valmet acts as the automation supplier to the Germany-based Steinmüller Babcock Environment, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company that is leading the construction projects for both plants.

The orders are included in Valmet's first quarter 2018 orders received.

Steinmüller Babcock Environment chose Valmet because it is a well-known supplier of automation solutions with a solid track record of established customers in the waste-to-energy (WtE) and biomass-to-energy (BtE) sectors. The company's decades-long experience in automation, profound project management know-how, as well as local service capabilities were among the key drivers to be selected as a supplier. Steinmüller Babcock Environment also had had good experience of working with Valmet, acting as a lot supplier, from a previous project in 2014 - the Tammervoima waste-to-energy plant in Tampere, Finland.

Unrivaled skills and expertise

Valmet is not only a solution provider but also a good partner that helps EPCs execute projects from engineering up to commissioning. The company's vast experience in working with WtE and BtE plants makes it an ideal partner in finding the most appropriate solutions during the engineering phase.

'A well proven distributed control system is among the most important packages in any modern plant. Today, it's the brain of the whole facility; there are no processes running without it. For our customers, it is essential to make sure the automation solution they select is efficient and reliable at all times,' says Johann Hilgers, Sales Manager, Automation, Valmet.

According to Theo Münch, Sales Director, Automation, Valmet: 'We are delighted to welcome Steinmüller Babcock Environment as our customer and work with them on the new automation projects in Vilnius and San Sebastian. To master any possible challenges, we'll be working closely together. We are glad that our modern and versatile automation solutions will help the regions to reduce greenhouse gases, the use of fossil fuels and the need for primary energy.'

Information about the Vilnius CHP plant project

Expected to go into operation in autumn 2019, the plant is owned by UAB Vilniaus Kogeneracine Jegaine, a company under control of the state-owned energy group Lietuvos Energija. The new Vilnius CHP plant will produce approximately 40% of Vilnius's district heat demand with around 0.4 TWh of electricity, which is enough to supply 230,000households. Construction of the plant has been classified by the Lithuanian government as a 'project of national economic significance.'

The scope of Valmet's delivery to the Vilnius CHP plant, owned by UAB Vilnius Cogeneration Plant, includes the Valmet DNA automation solution, HIMA safety system, Valmet DNA Machine Monitoring, Valmet Training Simulator and a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS).

Information about the San Sebastian waste treatment facility project

The San Sebastian waste treatment facility is scheduled for completion in 2019. The local waste collector Gipuzkoa Waste Management S.A. has been commissioned to finance, construct and operate the waste treatment center. Once completed, this waste treatment facility will be one of the cleanest waste treatment plants in the world, with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons of municipal waste. The energy generated by the plant is enough to provide electrical power to over 45,000 households.

For the San Sebastian waste treatment plant, built for Spanish Urbaser, Valmet DNA will be delivered with a HIMA safety system and a Valmet DNA Operate Trend and Event Archive solution.

In addition to technologies, Valmet will provide installation, engineering, FAT and commissioning for both plants.
