Tragedy on top of tragedy: Woman loses home after losing husband and mother

Feb. 09--Sierra Arabia and her two daughters, Leiana, 12, and Myliee Widener, 10 are sadly no strangers to tragedy.

Several years ago, Arabia's mate and the girls' father, Josh Widener, died in a freak work accident.

Then on Jan. 26, while Arabia was on her way home from work, their home caught fire and was totally demolished.

"Sierra's boyfriend, P.J. Sparkman, was there with the girls," said Debbie Parrish, Josh's mother and the girls' grandmother. "Sierra had gotten off work and stopped by Walmart on her way home. He got the girls out, but they lost everything."

The land and the mobile home had been placed in a trust for the girls, after the passing of their father. But tragically, they had no insurance on the home itself.

"Someone has given them lodging, a furnished place for a couple of months," Parrish said. "They have plenty of clothes."

Parrish said in fact so much clothing had been given to the family immediately after the fire they were rather overwhelmed, and many other immediate needs have been met.

"This is the second time in Sierra's life she had to start completely over," Parrish said. "When my son died, she couldn't afford to stay where they lived, so they had to move ... the kids had to change schools. Josh has been gone 7 and a half years."

Sierra is employed at Fisherman's Point out at Richland Chambers Lake. Originally from Hawaii, she came to Arlington with her family, and then settled in Corsicana. Another tragedy that affected the young woman was the loss of her 46-year-old mother not long ago.

"The smoke alarm woke up my youngest granddaughter ... P.J. was able to get the girls out, and save both Josh's ashes and her mother's ashes," Parrish said. "He was not able to get the big portrait of Josh, but he did burn his hands trying to put out the fire.

"We feel very heartbroken, but very blessed at the same time."

Their home, which was past the Highway Department out west of town, was paid for, as was the land, having been in trust for the children. But, since they had no insurance, they will have to start completely over with a residence.

The day before the fire was the elder girl's birthday, and all her gifts were lost in the fire. Parrish said a firefighter was able to cut a hole through a wall and pull out a rubber tote that contained Josh's belongings Sierra had saved.

A savings account has been opened at Prosperity Bank, 100 S. Main, Corsicana for the sole purpose of putting money toward another home for this family. Should you feel so moved to contribute to this fund, contact or visit Prosperity Bank and the account is set up Sierra D. Arabia -- Special Account for Home. There is also a GoFundMe account set up by a friend under Sierra Arabia Family House Fire.

"We want to say thank you to the kind people who have already made donations," Parrish said. "Also our family wants to thank you in advance for any donations made.

"And please, everyone check your smoke alarms, and make sure your batteries are good."
