Jan. 12--2:20 p.m. update: A funeral for the two stepbrothers killed in a car crash Wednesday in Cedar Park will be at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the North Austin Muslim Community Center. The center is at 11900 North Lamar Boulevard.
Zara Salman, who was driving the car that the stepbrothers were in, was the mother of 1-year-old Daniel Chaudhary and the stepmother of 8-year-old Elijah Chaudhary, said a member of the Muslim community who declined to be named.
Daniel Chaudhary will be buried at the ICGA Muslim Cemetery in Dale. The burial place for Elijah Chaudhary has not yet been determined.
Salman, 31, remained in critical condition as of Thursday night, officials said.
Earlier: Police have identified two children killed in a crash on Wednesday in Cedar Park near Walmart as 8-year-old Elijah Chaudhary and one-year-old Daniel Chaudhary.
Zara Salman, 31, who was driving the 2016 Nissan that the children were in, remained in critical condition Thursday at St. David's Round Rock Medical Center.
Police said the Nissan collided with a 2008 pickup truck at W. Whitestone Boulevard and Walton Way at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The driver and passenger in the truck were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The Chaudharys died at the scene. Elijah Chaudhary attended Winkley Elementary School in Leander, police said.
"Leander ISD is grieving the loss of one of our students in an auto accident, and our hearts go out to the student's family," said Matt Mitchell, a spokesman for the Leander School District.
"Additional resources, including counseling support, will be available for staff and students for as long as necessary. A letter to Winkley families was sent Thursday morning with advice for supporting their students. Out of respect for the family, we will not be sharing any additional information."
The Cedar Park City Council observed a moment of silence about the accident Thursday night after Cedar Park Mayor Matt Powell requested it.
"Yesterday was a really tough day," said Powell. "When there are child fatalities it's especially heart-wrenching."
Police said Thursday they couldn't confirm how Salman was related to the children who died.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the crash happened. Witnesses are asked to call 512-260-4834.
