Wirecard, the Germany-based card payments platform, and Orange Bank, a startup challenger bank based in France, announced an expansion of their existing relationship to allow all Android users in France the ability to make payments via Google Pay.

Orange Bank says that 17% of all mobile payments in France are made with the Orange Bank app already and this agreement should raise that percentage by a wide margin. The companies cited data showing about 6.6 million consumers or 15.6% of smartphone users in the country made at least one mobile payment at a retail store over a six-month period.

"We already had very good experiences with Wirecard when we first launched Orange Bank," Stephane Vallous, deputy CEO at Orange Bank, said in a release from Wirecard. "We were therefore delighted to be able to count on the support of our experienced partner for this project as well."

Orange Bank customers will be able to hold their mobile phones to a POS terminal in shops that accept Google Pay in order to make payment.
