Wirecard AG said Friday that it is holding talks with its lenders for the continuation of credit lines and business relationships.

The announcement comes hours after Markus Braun resigned with immediate effect as chief executive of the German digital-payment services company.

Shares in Wirecard have been in freefall after it delayed its 2019 results Thursday as its auditor refused to sign off the accounts believing it had been deceived over the existence of 1.9 billion euros ($2.1 billion) in cash supposedly held by the company.

Two banks in the Philippines meant to be holding over $2 billion on behalf of the company said they don't have the cash and never did.

"The confidence of the capital market in the company I have been managing for 18 years has been deeply shaken," Mr. Braun said.
