Volkswagen AG said Tuesday that Dirk Voeste will replace Ralf Pfitzner as head of sustainability as the division restructures.

Mr. Pfitzner is leaving the company after five years on the job, Volkswagen said. Mr. Voeste, who will take over on April 1, most recently worked as senior vice president at BASF SE in the chemical company's sustainability, regulatory and public-affairs division.

A sustainability council that has advised the company since 2016 will continue its work, but it will become smaller to improve agility, Volkswagen Chief Executive Oliver Blume said.
