He began his career with Phelps Dodge in 1977 as a mining engineer at the Tyrone, New Mexico copper operation.

In the early 1990’s, he was technical services manager for the development, construction and startup of the Candelaria mine in Chile.
After returning from Chile, Mr. Bartlett served as general manager of the Morenci mine in Arizona, president of Chino Mines Company in New Mexico, President of Climax Molybdenum Company and Vice President, North American Operations for Phelps Dodge Mining Company.
From 2001 to 2003, he served as Senior Vice President, Mining Operations in charge of all Phelps Dodge copper mining operations in North and South America.
He most recently served as Senior Vice President, Development for Phelps Dodge Mining Company (subsequently Freeport-McMoRan Mining Company) from 2003 through 2007.
Mr. Bartlett holds a BSc degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Arizona and an MBA from Western New Mexico University.
